Publication Ethics
Jurnal Pendidikan dan Studi Islam (PISI) is committed to maintaining the highest standards of academic integrity, research ethics, and responsible scholarly publishing. The journal follows internationally recognized principles of publication ethics and expects all parties involved in the publication process—including authors, editors, reviewers, and the publisher—to uphold honesty, transparency, fairness, confidentiality, and accountability.
PISI does not tolerate plagiarism, fabrication, falsification, duplicate publication, citation manipulation, unethical authorship, conflicts of interest that are not disclosed, or any other form of academic misconduct.
These publication ethics guidelines apply to all manuscripts submitted to and published by PISI.
1. Principles of Publication Ethics
PISI is committed to the following principles:
- Academic integrity and honesty
- Originality and responsible scholarship
- Transparency in research and publication
- Fair and objective peer review
- Confidentiality
- Appropriate attribution and citation
- Responsible authorship
- Disclosure of conflicts of interest
- Protection of research participants
- Correction of the scholarly record when necessary
- Accountability for published research
All participants in the publication process are expected to act responsibly and professionally.
2. Responsibilities of Authors
Authors are responsible for ensuring that their manuscripts meet appropriate standards of academic and research integrity.
Authors must:
2.1 Originality
Authors must submit original work that has not been previously published in another journal, book, conference proceeding, or other publication unless appropriately disclosed and permitted.
The manuscript must not be simultaneously submitted to more than one journal.
2.2 Plagiarism
Authors must ensure that all ideas, statements, data, arguments, quotations, and materials derived from other sources are appropriately acknowledged and cited.
Plagiarism in any form is unacceptable, including:
- Direct copying without citation
- Paraphrasing without attribution
- Presenting another person's ideas as one's own
- Self-plagiarism
- Duplicate publication
- Unacceptable reuse of previously published material
Submitted manuscripts may be checked using plagiarism or similarity-detection software.
2.3 Research Integrity
Authors must report research findings honestly and accurately.
Authors must not engage in:
- Fabrication of data
- Falsification of data
- Manipulation of research results
- Selective reporting intended to mislead readers
- Manipulation of images or research materials
- Fabrication of references
Research data should be recorded and maintained appropriately so that the research process can be verified when necessary.
2.4 Authorship
Only individuals who have made substantial intellectual or scholarly contributions to the research should be listed as authors.
Authors should have contributed meaningfully to areas such as:
- Research conception and design
- Data collection
- Data analysis and interpretation
- Theoretical development
- Manuscript preparation
- Critical revision
Individuals who have provided limited administrative, technical, financial, or general assistance should not automatically be listed as authors.
2.5 Corresponding Author
The corresponding author is responsible for communication with the journal and for ensuring that:
- All authors approve the manuscript.
- All authors approve the final version.
- Author information is accurate.
- All authors are aware of the submission.
- Ethical and authorship requirements are fulfilled.
2.6 Changes in Authorship
Any addition, deletion, or rearrangement of authors after submission must be justified and approved by all authors.
The editorial team may request written confirmation from all authors before approving authorship changes.
3. Responsibilities of Editors
Editors are responsible for ensuring that submitted manuscripts are evaluated fairly, objectively, and according to the journal's academic and ethical standards.
Editors must:
- Evaluate manuscripts based on academic merit.
- Maintain editorial independence.
- Select appropriate reviewers.
- Protect the confidentiality of submitted manuscripts.
- Avoid discrimination based on nationality, ethnicity, gender, religion, institutional affiliation, political views, or personal characteristics.
- Manage conflicts of interest.
- Respond appropriately to ethical concerns.
- Maintain the integrity of the scholarly record.
- Make publication decisions based on scholarly quality and relevance.
Editors must not use unpublished information from submitted manuscripts for their own research or personal advantage.
4. Editorial Decision-Making
Editorial decisions should be based on:
- Originality
- Academic significance
- Methodological rigor
- Relevance to the journal's scope
- Clarity and quality of analysis
- Contribution to scholarship
- Ethical compliance
Editorial decisions must not be influenced by commercial interests, personal relationships, institutional pressure, or the authors' reputation.
The Editor-in-Chief has ultimate responsibility for publication decisions, subject to the journal's policies and ethical requirements.
5. Responsibilities of Reviewers
Reviewers play an essential role in maintaining the academic quality of PISI.
Reviewers must:
- Evaluate manuscripts objectively.
- Provide constructive and academically justified comments.
- Identify relevant published work that has not been cited where appropriate.
- Identify potential methodological or ethical problems.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Complete reviews within the agreed timeframe.
- Disclose potential conflicts of interest.
- Decline assignments when they cannot provide an impartial review.
Reviewers must not use information, ideas, data, or arguments contained in unpublished manuscripts for personal or professional benefit.
6. Reviewer Confidentiality
PISI applies a double-blind peer-review system.
The identities of authors and reviewers are kept confidential during the review process.
Reviewers must not:
- Share manuscripts with unauthorized persons.
- Discuss manuscripts publicly.
- Contact authors directly regarding the review.
- Reveal their identity to authors.
- Use unpublished information obtained through peer review.
Any suspected breach of confidentiality should be reported to the editorial team.
7. Conflicts of Interest
All authors, reviewers, and editors must disclose any actual, potential, or perceived conflict of interest that could influence the research or publication process.
Potential conflicts may include:
- Financial relationships
- Employment relationships
- Institutional relationships
- Personal relationships
- Academic competition
- Previous collaboration
- Funding relationships
- Other interests that could compromise impartiality
Individuals with significant conflicts of interest may be excluded from the relevant editorial or review process.
8. Research Ethics and Human Participants
Research involving human participants must comply with applicable ethical standards.
Where relevant, authors should provide evidence of:
- Ethical approval
- Informed consent
- Research permission
- Protection of participant confidentiality
- Appropriate handling of personal data
- Protection of vulnerable participants
Authors must not disclose personally identifiable information without appropriate consent.
Where ethical approval is not required, authors should provide an appropriate explanation where necessary.
9. Data Integrity and Data Availability
Authors are responsible for the accuracy and integrity of the research data presented in their manuscripts.
Authors should retain relevant research data and documentation for an appropriate period after publication.
Where ethically and legally possible, authors are encouraged to make supporting research data available to facilitate verification and further scholarly research.
Data containing confidential or personally identifiable information should not be publicly disclosed without appropriate authorization.
10. Duplicate Submission and Redundant Publication
Authors must not submit the same manuscript simultaneously to multiple journals.
PISI considers redundant or duplicate publication to be a serious ethical concern.
If substantial portions of a manuscript have previously been published, authors must disclose the previous publication to the editorial team and explain the relationship between the works.
11. Citation Ethics
Authors must provide accurate and appropriate citations for all sources used.
Citation manipulation is prohibited.
Authors and reviewers should not:
- Add unnecessary citations merely to increase citation counts.
- Request citations solely to benefit a particular author, journal, or publication.
- Cite irrelevant sources.
- Manipulate references to artificially increase academic metrics.
Citations should be included because they are academically relevant to the argument or research.
12. Misconduct in Research and Publication
PISI considers the following activities forms of academic or publication misconduct:
- Plagiarism
- Fabrication
- Falsification
- Duplicate publication
- Simultaneous submission
- Unethical authorship
- Ghost authorship
- Gift authorship
- Citation manipulation
- Peer-review manipulation
- Data manipulation
- Undisclosed conflicts of interest
- Misrepresentation of research findings
- Fabrication of references
- Breach of research ethics
The journal reserves the right to investigate suspected misconduct.
13. Handling Allegations of Misconduct
When an allegation of misconduct is received, the editorial team will assess the concern and determine whether further investigation is necessary.
The journal may:
- Request clarification from the authors.
- Request supporting research documentation.
- Consult reviewers or editorial board members.
- Contact the authors' affiliated institution where appropriate.
- Suspend the editorial process.
- Reject the manuscript.
- Issue a correction or retraction after publication when necessary.
The journal seeks to handle allegations fairly, confidentially, and in accordance with appropriate publication-ethics principles.
14. Corrections and Retractions
PISI is committed to maintaining the accuracy of the published scholarly record.
Correction
A correction may be issued when a published article contains an error that does not invalidate the overall findings or scholarly contribution.
Retraction
A published article may be retracted when there is strong evidence of:
- Serious research misconduct
- Fabricated or falsified data
- Plagiarism
- Major methodological or factual errors
- Duplicate publication
- Unethical research
- Other circumstances that significantly undermine the reliability of the publication
A retraction will be clearly identified and linked to the original article in the journal's publication system.
15. Artificial Intelligence and Generative AI
PISI recognizes that artificial intelligence and generative AI tools may be used as supporting technologies in scholarly research and manuscript preparation.
Authors may use AI tools for appropriate purposes such as:
- Grammar and language improvement
- Translation
- Formatting assistance
- Preliminary organization of ideas
- Technical editorial assistance
However, authors remain fully responsible for the content of their manuscripts.
AI tools must not be listed as authors because they cannot assume responsibility for authorship, research integrity, disclosure, or accountability.
Authors must carefully verify AI-assisted content, particularly:
- Factual claims
- Citations
- References
- Statistical information
- Quotations
- Research findings
The use of AI must never result in fabricated data, fabricated references, plagiarism, misrepresentation, or other forms of academic misconduct.
Where substantive generative AI assistance has been used, authors should disclose its use in accordance with the journal's current policy.
16. Artificial Intelligence in Peer Review
Reviewers must not upload confidential manuscripts, unpublished research data, or other protected materials into publicly accessible or third-party generative AI systems when doing so would compromise confidentiality.
Reviewers remain responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of all materials received during peer review.
AI tools should not replace the reviewer's independent academic judgment.
17. Copyright and Intellectual Property
Authors must ensure that manuscripts do not violate the copyright or intellectual property rights of others.
Permission should be obtained where copyrighted materials are reproduced beyond permitted scholarly use.
Authors are responsible for obtaining appropriate permission for:
- Figures
- Tables
- Photographs
- Instruments
- Extended quotations
- Other copyrighted materials
18. Funding Disclosure
Authors must disclose sources of financial support for the research.
Funding information should identify, where applicable:
- Funding organization
- Grant or project information
- Institutional support
- Other significant financial assistance
If the research received no external funding, authors should state this clearly.
19. Conflict of Interest Statement
Authors should provide a conflict-of-interest statement in the manuscript.
Where no conflict exists, the following statement may be used:
“The authors declare that there is no conflict of interest related to this study.”
20. Publisher Responsibilities
The publisher supports the editorial team in maintaining the academic and ethical standards of PISI.
The publisher should:
- Support the independence of editorial decision-making.
- Provide appropriate infrastructure for scholarly publishing.
- Support the integrity and preservation of published content.
- Assist in addressing ethical concerns.
- Support corrections and retractions when necessary.
- Avoid commercial influence over editorial decisions.
- Maintain the accessibility and integrity of the journal's published record.
21. Editorial Board Responsibilities
Members of the Editorial Board are expected to:
- Support the journal's academic objectives.
- Provide expertise when requested.
- Assist in maintaining scholarly quality.
- Recommend qualified reviewers.
- Support ethical publication practices.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Declare potential conflicts of interest.
- Promote the journal's academic integrity.
22. Appeals and Complaints
Authors may appeal an editorial decision when they believe that:
- A significant procedural error occurred.
- The manuscript was evaluated based on a serious misunderstanding.
- Relevant evidence was overlooked.
- There is a legitimate concern regarding the fairness of the review process.
Appeals should provide clear academic reasons and relevant supporting evidence.
Complaints regarding editorial conduct, peer review, authorship, or publication ethics should be submitted to the journal's editorial office.
The journal will consider complaints and appeals fairly and confidentially.
23. Transparency and Accountability
PISI is committed to transparency throughout the publication process.
The journal seeks to provide clear information regarding:
- Editorial policies
- Peer-review procedures
- Publication requirements
- Authorship
- Conflicts of interest
- Research ethics
- Publication fees, where applicable
- Corrections and retractions
- Data and research integrity
The journal does not guarantee acceptance based on author status, institutional affiliation, or academic reputation.
24. Ethical Commitment
All parties involved in the publication of Jurnal Pendidikan dan Studi Islam (PISI) are expected to uphold the principles of honesty, fairness, transparency, confidentiality, accountability, and respect for academic integrity.
By submitting or reviewing a manuscript for PISI, authors and reviewers acknowledge their responsibility to comply with these publication ethics principles.
PISI reserves the right to take appropriate action when violations of publication ethics are identified, both before and after publication.
The ultimate goal of this policy is to ensure that every article published by Jurnal Pendidikan dan Studi Islam (PISI) represents reliable, responsible, original, and ethically conducted scholarship that contributes meaningfully to the advancement of education and Islamic studies.
